The first thing one notices after holding the phone is that, it’s big! It sports a 5.98 inches screen but unlike the current trend of bezel less or full vision display phones, which accommodate a 6 inches screen in the size of a typical 5.5 inches phone, the Infinix Zero 5 has true thick bezels on the top and bottom, due to which the phone is quite big and difficult to handle. When it comes to the design… 

the phone is very well built, it comes with a full metal unibody design in Red, Gold and Black colours and looks good. The phone packs in a massive 4350 mAh battery which gives it a very good battery backup. It also supports fast charging. But due to the big screen and battery, it weighs at 197 grams which is quite heavy, and will need some time to get used to. The 5.98 inches display on the Infinix Zero 5 has a full HD resolution with 368 PPI pixel density, the display quality is good. The phone is powered by the new 2.6 GHz octa core Helio P25 MT6757 processor by Mediatek, coupled with 6 GB RAM and Mali-T880 GPU. The processor has a sufficiently decent performance and handles everything well, and due to the big 6 GB RAM it handles multitasking very well. The highlight of the smartphone is its dual rear camera setup with a primary 12 MP Sony IMX386 sensor with wide-angle lens, f/2.0 aperture and 1.25 μm pixel size, while a 13 MP secondary camera with telephoto lens with f/2.6 aperture and 2x optical zoom. The picture quality is good, it captures accurate colors and good details. The portrait shots turn out good with nice bokeh effects, however you can expect some problems with identification of edges like it is with most budget dual camera smartphones. There is a 16 MP selfie shooter with f/2.0 aperture and LED flash, it clicks very good selfies. The Zero 5 runs on Android 7.0 Nougat based on company’s XOS 3.0 UI, it is good and feature rich, the company has promised an Oreo upgrade as well. It is a dual sim phone with dedicated slots and comes with 64 GB of internal storage, which is expandable up to 128 GB. The fingerprint scanner on the back is good. It uses USB Type-C for data syncing and charging. The company also ships a Type-C to micro USB adapter, average quality headphones and a plastic case with the phone.

Overall, the Infinix Zero 5 is a balanced smartphone with good features. But there are few things like, the screen size is too big for comfortable usage, it comes from a new company and is priced on the higher side, while there are some amazing phones like the Mi A1 or the Moto G5s Plus (even big screen lovers can now get something like the Honor 9i, without sacrificing on comfort), already offering a more balanced package. The Nubia Z17 Mini runs on the popular and powerful 1.95 GHz octa core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor coupled with 4 GB and Adreno 510 GPU. The performance is very good, heavy games and multitasking are smooth. However, the biggest highlight of the phone is its dual rear camera setup which includes two 13 MP Sony IMX258 sensors, out of which one clicks RGB (color) and other clicks Monochrome (black & white) images, which are then combined together to produce high quality images with added depth and details. The picture quality is very good in day light as well as low light conditions. Also, the feature rich camera app comes with Bokeh effect, 3D Mode, Portrait mode, Refocus/Blur after click, Black & White shots, Time Shuttle, Star trail and more features. With excellent picture quality and great camera features, the Nubia Z17 Mini is a great camera phone. The 16 MP f/2.0 aperture front camera with lots of filters is a very good shooter as well, it also comes with a ‘screen flash’ to assist in low light selfies. The phone runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow based Nubia UI 4.0, which offers some additional features like double click on the edge to go back, swipe up/down from the edge to switch or start apps, swipe repeatedly from the edge to free up RAM, swipe from both edges to adjust brightness and swipe up from bottom of the screen to split the screen into two to let you access two apps at the same time. It features a good fingerprint scanner on the back and comes with USB Type-C for data syncing and charging. It is a dual sim (hybrid slot) phone with 4G and VoLTE support. It packs 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable upto 200 GB via microSD card. The phone is backed by a non-removable Li-Po 2950 mAh battery, now this is the part which should have been better as the processor used in this phone is not very battery efficient like the Snapdragon 625, although the battery backup is decent enough and it also supports fast charging.

Should you buy?
Overall, the ZTE Nubia Z17 Mini is a very good mid-budget smartphone which packs great cameras, excellent performance, beautiful design and balanced features. It ticks most of the boxes right and can be a good choice if you want a camera centric smartphone.

9. LG Q6+:

Few months ago, LG introduced its flagship LG G6, which was the company’s first phone to come with 18:9 FullVision display and now, the company has introduced the LG Q6+ which is among the first phones in India to come with 18:9 aspect ratio in the budget price segment. The 5.5 inches FHD+ display has excellent quality and the 18:9 aspect ratio with minimal bezels makes the phone very compact and comfortable to hold. It is really a premium experience to look at this beautiful screen. The phone has a metallic frame but the back panel is built of glossy plastic which is a fingerprint magnet… 

and prone to scratches. It’s build quality is all is good and due to its display, the phone looks really beautiful. On the performance front, the phone disappoints, it runs on the Snapdragon 435 processor with 4 GB RAM, which is usually seen in the low budget phones while this price range comes with excellent processors like the Snapdragon 625. Although the optimisation on the phone is good and it operates very smoothly for day to day usage and also plays games well however, one should not expect high end performance from it. The LG Q6+ runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat with LG’s UI 5.0 running on top, which also runs on the LG G6. It is good and feature rich however, still looks like the thing of past, it needs to become minimalist and modern. In the optics department, the LG Q6+ has got a 13 MP f/2.2 aperture rear camera which has decent quality however, the quality is average in low light. The 5 MP front camera with 100° wide angle is an excellent selfie shooter. A big disappointment in the phone is the lack of the fingerprint scanner, which is now common in all the phones. To compensate it, the phone comes with Face recognition unlock, which works in ideal conditions but fails most of the times when the lighting is low and when the face has some accessories. The decision to skip the fingerprint scanner is poor, LG should not have adopted this cost cutting measure until its software was fully baked like Apple’s iPhone X. The Face recognition technology could have been a nice addition to with along with fingerprint scanner, but having it at the cost of the fingerprint scanner is miserable. The phone supports dual sim and 4G and comes with dedicated slots for the two sim cards and microSD card. It comes with 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable up to 2 TB. The non-removable 3000 mAh Li-Po battery delivers good battery backup, disappointingly again, doesn’t support fast charging.

Should you buy?
Overall, the LG Q6+ with its narrow bezel 18:9 aspect ratio good quality display, offers a premium feature at a budget price. However, it seriously messes up with two things, the processor and the fingerprint scanner. So, the phone has a great thing to offer but it also takes away few good things, now it’s up to you, if you are not a very heavy user and want to try a narrow bezel 18:9 phone, go with it otherwise there are much better package available.

HTC, in an attempt to regain its lost grounds, has launched its Desire 10 Pro in the mid budget segment in India. It comes in a beautiful design with metallic body, having a soft rubberized back which feels very good in hands. It comes in black and white colors and both the color variants have a golden lining running through the edges, antennas and camera circle which adds a charm to the design. The HTC Desire 10 Pro sports a 5.5 inches Full HD display and has very good quality. It runs on the 1.8 GHz Octa Core Mediatek MT6755 Helio P10 processor… 

at this price much better processors are expected, at least the Snapdragon 625 could have been used. It comes coupled with 4 GB RAM and the performance is good enough for daily usage and moderate to heavy gaming. The phone packs a 20 MP ƒ/2.2 aperture rear camera which is an excellent shooter, the pictures in low lighting conditions also come out good. It also comes with Laser Autofocus for quick focusing. The 13 MP ƒ/2.2 aperture clicks great selfies as well, it is assisted with display flash for low light selfies. The camera app also includes lots of modes, one amongst them is the selfie panorama mode which comes out quite handy. It also comes with a full pro mode. The phone runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow based HTC Sense UI which is fast, beautiful, customisable and light weight. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. It packs 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable upto 2 TB via a microSD card. However, it has a hybrid slot, which means you can either use the two sim or one sim and a microSD card at a time. The phone comes with a fast fingerprint scanner situated on the back, which can also be used to protect apps apart from unlocking the phone. The HTC Desire 10 Pro comes with HTC’s BoomSound technology and delivers excellent audio quality via headphones. It also includes NFC for additional connectivity. The phone is powered by a 3000 mAh battery which delivers good battery backup and supports fast charging.

Should you buy?
Overall, the HTC Desire 10 Pro is a good balanced smartphone. It comes with excellent cameras, very good design and good all round features. However, it is not a performance powerhouse and is overpriced, the competition offers a lot more here.
